Thousands of years ago, someone, somewhere spotted a shiny rock and the world was introduced to gold for the first time. Since then, gold has become a fundament of every human culture; its brilliance, beauty and malleability making it desirable and precious. However, long before it acquired monetary value, gold was prized for what it symbolised as much as for what could be done with it.The ancients used gold to represent balance in all things, giving rise to the phrase ‘the golden mean’. It was referred to as ‘the tears of the sun’ and was the ideal, otherworldly, material through which man could express his ideas of divinity. However, in order to manifest those ideas, gold must first be melted down. While some might see this as destruction, others would argue that the process is more akin to transformation; that destruction and creation are opposite sides of the same coin.
