Can you trust that what you see around you is truthful? Our eyes are just one part of the complex system that engenders our vision. However, what we think we see is much more complex than light hitting the retina. We draw on our memories and imaginations to contextualise and interpret those images. The lesser our experiences, we less information we have to imbue those images with nuance, subtlety and meaning. What we see is contextualised according to the sum of what we have experienced. In order to see things in their most honest light, we need to broaden our field of understanding. By engaging in new experiences and encounters, we throw new light on old information and may discover that we have been perceiving them incorrectly. The eyes are the magpies of the senses; it doesn’t pay to trust them entirely.
